Jul 24, 2009 · As piston velocity increases, loading goes up by the square of the speed change. Double the stroke with the same rod angle and you have four times the loading. Velocity increase caused by rod angle is a cosine function. A change near zero angle would have virtually no effect but as angle gets larger the effect rapidly becomes pronounced.

Increasing the rod length moves the piston away from the counterweight and has the added effect of making the rod ratio more acceptable (more on that later). Now rotate the comination to top dead center with the increased stroke and longer rod.
